1. Take the most advanced classes that you can take in HS. Take as many honors and AP classes as you can. Do well.

2. Go to the best university that you can get into. You can major in anything — as long as you take the Pre-Med classes. However, it is always a good idea to do more than the bare minimum — so majoring in biology or chemistry would be a good idea.

3. Go to medical school for four years to get your MD or DO. Yes — in the US you have to go to school for another four years after you get your BS. At this point, you are a doctor.

4. Spend one year as a medical intern (you get paid for this) and two to six years as a resident learning your specialty (you get paid for this, too)..

5. Take an exam to become board certified.

It is only cheaper to go to college in-state if you go to a public school. The quality of your undergraduate school is an important factor in getting into a medical school. The only public university you should consider in CT is UConn. Go there or to a good private university (or to a better public university in a different state). The other public universities in CT aren’t that great, and won’t help you get into medical school. Others will tell you it doesn’t matter — but it does.

You may be able to get a scholarship, and will certainly be able to get loans. Doctors make a lot of money — so you should be able to pay off the loans.

You should talk to your school counselor to be sure you meet requirements for college.
Medical schools start at the Master’s level, graduate school.
So, you first get a BS in a field like biology, physics, chemistry, or even English, before going to Medical School.

It normally will take you 4 years to finish graduate school, training in your medical specialty.
You will graduate with a Doctor of Medicine Degree.

Then you do your "residency." Most are one year programs, some are two years. You will get on-the-job training, during your residency, often being on call 24/7. with very low salary.

Therefore, the main problem becoming a doctor, is not just the interest or desire, but ability to pay for 8 years of college, and support yourself while doing your residency.

There are some scholarships and grants you can get, but you will need a distinguished high school and college performance, with good references to qualify.
