I am unsure whether I should apply for a student loan, since I have enough money saved which I could use to fund my tuition etc…

But, the student loan does seem like the cheapest loan you will ever get and I would like to be able to save the money I have for use as a deposit in my first house later on.

Student loans aren’t like normal loans, they have much less interest and you don’t need to pay them back untill you are making at least £15000 a year.

and keeping the money so my mortgage would be small leaves me with the same amount of debt in the end. But with a lower effective interest level.

YES! A student loan is the best possible loan you could get and is tax deductible. If you are looking to get a home, car, etc anytime soon it is much better to be paying off a student loan than a car loan or unable to put a decent down payment on a home. You could always get the loan and if you have enough in savings after everything just pay it off early.

I am still in the process of applying for my Perspective Student Visa. But I want to have everything in order for all the steps I need to take to be a student in the UK. I want to be able to apply for my Student Visa while I am in the UK. I would like to avoid the extra expense of having to fly back to Canada then return to the UK just because I forgot to “dot an i or cross a t”, if that is at all possible. I want to study in Wales. I am not sure if I will be accepted to a University or have to do some schooling at a college my first year or two in the UK. Is there different ways to applying to either?

So let us say for now that I have visited the schools that I was interested in. I have been accepted into a University and would like to take their offer. I am in the process of applying for my Student Visa. What should I make certain I do?

What do I need for this?
1)The entire list of documents sent in for my Perspective Student Visa

2)Letter of Acceptance from the school of my choice, the Visa Letter I believe it is called?

3)A letter or documents from the Canadian government; showing that I am on a Student Loan, that covers the school of my choice tuition and fees and my maintenance? What is this called?

4)Information on the address, residence, where I will be living in the UK. It is a private residence that is rented by another person. I will be renting a room off of the tenant that pays the main rent and utility bills.
a)Do I need to give information about the others living there?
b)Do I need to include my rental amount per month?
c)Do I need to show a rental agreement between myself and the main tenant?
d)Do I need permission to live there from the actual owner of the residence?

I am aware that students are allowed to work a few hours a month while doing their studies. I would prefer to be able to devote all of my time to studies, but I also understand that it can be expensive to live there. I have done comparisons with the grocery shops there online with the ones here. I have found from that research, to my surprise that the food is either the same cost and in most situations cheaper then I pay for it here where I live. It could just be the area I am living in, as I already know that it is more expensive than other areas in Canada. I have also spent time looking at the cost of renting places over there. I can get a larger place, that looks better then the place I am currently living in here for cheaper then I pay per month. Again that could be due to where I live and where I am planning to go to school in Wales.

5)Do international students who are studying in the UK need a National Insurance Number?
a)If so, how does a student go about applying for the National Insurance Number?
b)If I end up needing to work while I am in the UK on my Student Visa to help cover my cost, do I need anything else?
c)How can I find out if a perspective employer is allowed to hire International Students?
6)I have been told that applying for a bank account in the UK can be a bit difficult.
a)Is it true that I will need the National Insurance Number to apply for a bank account?
b)Do I also need a utility bill with my name on it?

I know that I can be allowed to apply for the UK Student Visa while I am still in the UK and after I have been accepted into a school. I also know that I could end up having to apply for my UK Student Visa back in Canada. I would like to avoid having to fly back to Canada just to fill out some documents and then accrue the extra expense of flying back to the UK to attend school.

For this let us say that I came to the UK on April 6 2010.

1) You need offer letter from the University, offering you a full time course with 15 hours per week or more for a duration of longer than six months. If you don’t have it you cannot apply for Student visa. There is no such thing "prospective student visa" (its actually a visit visa allowing one to study for less than six months, non-extendible. You must apply for full student visa & in Canada not in UK. Now please read further).

2) Lease agreement is handy if its privately rented place. Alternatively a letter from University, confirming that you can live on-campus.

3) If u intend to work, u can only do it in 2010. The allowed time is 20 hours in week of 7 days & full time during holidays from school/Uni. You will apply for National Insurance number, once u have the job offer. (Keep in mind that from 1st Jan 2011, UK Government is bringing in new rules of banning all kind of work for non-EU students).

4) Please bring three last bank statements from Canada with you, and opening Student bank account wont be a problem, as far as u can show the Bank Manager, a letter from University with ur enrollment in a course. You cannot apply online for bank account in UK, proof required that ur stay in UK will be as student (copy of page of visa & copy of page with Entry in UK stamp required).

As far as I know for student visa you must apply in person & you will be interviewed by visa officer in UK High Commission. Please use the website (UKVISAS, printed below) to book an interview appointment.

I would ideally like to apply for a permanent visa for a state and live there for the year previous to beginning university and remain there after finishing. This, i hope, would allow me to receive in-state tuition fees, although I’ve seen people saying you cannot get a visa without certain requirements.

Can anyone help with ways for getting loans in the UK for US universities and also about visas.

I have a cousin in Michigan so would this allow me to apply for residency in this state?

No, a cousin is not close enough to get you residency. You have to marry an American citizen or have a member of immediate family there, mum, dad, brother or sister. Phone the American Embassy and make an appointment to speak to them; they will tell you all you need to know about residency and visas.

You can work your tail off trying to "get" the money, and come up with the same answer I’ve already given you, or you can put that same effort into earning the money and actually save some.

You don’t necessarily have to "get a job." Check in your community and family for odd jobs. Shovel snow, wash windows, run errands. Do stuff nobody likes to do, like clean bathtubs and toilets. It just depends on how bad you want to earn the money, all you have to do is be resourceful, honest and trustworthy, and work hard.

The car is still for sale. My 2008 Honda Odyssey is in great shape,no engine problems,damages or hidden defects.It is $9000.00 Hasn’t been involved in any accident. Nearly all my holidays are on the hills, usually for a month at a time, camping and living off the land as far as possible but I always have dry foods with me…..oats, barley, dried peas, lentils, etc. Fish,fowl, and rabbits add to that, plus numerous plants you can eat, either raw or cooked.
A fresh trout cooked over a pit of red -hot heather cinders is a joy.
If you make a fire you have to know what you are doing, and never ever leave a fire unattended, or left to burn out after you’ve gone. It must be properly dowsed and covered to avoid spoiling or even wrecking the countryside.
Most places they are illegal.

On some northern beaches you can get armfuls of sea spinach or go wading anywhere round Britain on rocky shorelines to collect sea lettuce. crabs, and shellfish. Some sandy and muddy/sandy shores are good for cockles and winkles, and mussels.
For plants, Richard Maybey’s book "Food For Free" is a very good guide to what you can eat from the fields and hedgerows. Look for one in the charity shops and second-hand bookshops, or get one cheap from Amazon.

You won’t get assisstance to live rough, apart from any normal benefits you may be claiming, like Jobseeker’s Allowance, for which you’ll need an address anyway, but you can buy a Coleman Viper for £30 now which will withstand heavy weather for a long time, and get a good petrol or paraffin stove for £15 if you’re lucky. Full price decent quality ones cost £40 upwards.
A four-season sleeping bag and cover will cost at least £60 for decent quality….Vango are the amongst best bargains at the moment, and you can sometimes find Vango mountain tents for £50….top stuff for the price.
Stainless steel pans can be bought in charity shops for £1, and really good ones for less than £3.
I used a Viper for years as my main tent and it’s still as good as new.

Yes, and survive the winter. You can be warmer and drier in a decent tent and sleeping bag on the moors in mid-winter than some folks are in damp housing with no money to pay for heating.
I’ve had to get rid of layers before at -15C ‘cos I was getting too warm.
Doing it and armchair -thinking -it are not the same thing……ask thousands who have lived in harsh conditions for months at a time….they know.
You could even have a drink in a pub in Keswick or Ambleside and ask Chris Bonnington if he’s around….he’s quite amenable to a good chat…..and you might even believe it if it comes from him.
Or go and do it if you’re fit enough…the ultimate test of truth.
